Still Stuck at Week 1 / Sunday, November 15, 2009
So.
Being the idiot i am, i'm still stuck at the EPIC FAIL LEVEL of not updating my blog, meaning i'm still stuck at week 1.
Now.
To blog on Don Norman's TED video.
And i have to answer questions.

1. Think about the role of emotions/mindset in the creative process. Remember the example he cited. Recall any brainstorming sessions you conducted before (as well as the in-class exercise earlier) - were the sessions conducted effectively? Why/not?

To me, i think emotions and mindset play a huge role in the creative process because moods and emotions affect the outcome of anything you are doing, and mindsets affect the limitations you would set on your work, hence leading to affecting the outcome of what you are doing.

Erm, to me the brainstorming sessions were pretty much not very good. Since most of us are like half dead every time the sessions are conducted. Because we are all half dead, we pretty much can't think creatively or work at all.

AND FINALLY!

End of all the Week 1 posts.

So. Assignments.
a) Draw an image that represents you:

Apparently i just drew... um..... me?

I felt i am a loner so i drew a rabbit away from the group of other rabbits who are having fun and enjoying them selves.

b) Draw an image that shows where you are now in life :

Apparently i couldn't draw that. For a simple reason. We are never still in life. We are constantly moving. And so, what i draw as 'Now' is actually the 'Past'.

What the !?@#$% is Creativity!? ==> Week 1 / Wednesday, October 28, 2009
So, creativity. What is it? Through some research i did, here are some clues on what creativity is.

From: http://www.csun.edu/~vcpsy00h/creativity/define.htm

1) Creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others.

2) Creativity is any act, idea, or product that changes an existing domain, or that transforms an existing domain into a new one...What counts is whether the novelty he or she produces is accepted for inclusion in the domain.

3) Creativity, then refers both to the capacity to produce such works, as in "How can we foster our employees' creativity?" and to the activity of generating such products, as in "Creativity requires hard work."

From: http://www.creativity.emory.edu/what-is-creativity.shtml

4) "Creativity is absorption in experience, savoring complexity, recognizing interdependence, and striving to embody love."

5) "Creativity can mean the creation of an absolutely new idea, but it also means seeing how to combine known ideas in a new way, or exploring something we all know from a unique angle."

From: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,288514,00.html

6) ''It's connecting with something that's deep in one's soul. There's a stillness, there's a quietness. And through the quietness, one really hears the inner voice.''

7) ''It's the ability to look at a situation with a unique — sometimes tortured, sometimes demented, sometimes humorous — vision.''

8) ''Creativity is finding the truth in yourself.''

9) ''Creativity is being unique and not taking any outside influences, but using what comes from within.''

10) ''It's just something you've got to do. It feeds your soul. It's what comes.''

i) What is Imagination/Creativity? (Please provide your own definition, write down as much as you know about these terms. How do they relate to design? Has your conception of creativity changed since coming into SD?

Imagination. A word which describe the awesome uniqueness of people to think about everything in a certain manner such that not all people are able to understand and comprehend, but yet, able to enjoy the idea or concept that was thought about. Through imagination, we tie different design elements together, forming a mental image of something that most people would not have thought of or much less seen before, thereby creating something imaginative.

Creativity. A word which i believe as the the driving force behind every work or art. Creativity pushes people to think of options and changes the way the idea that was imagined to be when made with perhaps different materials or in a different scale. Breaking boundaries via creative methods or ideas pushes the next design or artwork to a whole new level, inspiring more and more creative methods of working on the same idea.

After coming into SD, i realized that most of the time, there are many requirements and limitations, and that most of the requirements/limitations stop us from thinking out of the box, and restricts us from doing the work in the way we imagined it to be. And so, my concept of creativity has changed when i realized that in SD, creativity of works is not what YOU think is nice, however it is what the CLIENT thinks is nice, which applies to the harsh reality of the world.

ii) Do you think you are creative? Why/Not? Please explain in more detail (reflect on your creative process in Sem 1 while going through the Common Foundation courses) to answer this.

Hmm. Do i think i'm creative? I don't really think i am creative. Throughout Semester 1 of the Common Foundation, i found myself working within the boundaries of requirements, limitations and expectations, and so, my works weren't exactly creative.
However outside of school, i'm always working on random projects that i come up for myself, like drawing up shirt designs, posters and profile pictures which i find many people telling me that i'm creative and so, i guess, doing something for your own enjoyment allows people to do much more creative work than when working with requirements and limitations.

iii) What were the last 3 creative things you did? Describe in some detail, and provide criteria why it was creative. If you have not done anything creative recently, please say more about why that is so.

The last 3 creative things that i did would most probably a shirt design for my friend which he wanted for a forum and i thought it was quite creative because it was the first time i used graphics in a shirt design and created a shirt for the public to enjoy.
And i can't think of the other 2 now, because my brain is clogged with rubbish.

iv) Do you think Creativity can be taught/and learned? Why/Not?

No, i don't think creativity can be taught or learned in anyway as creativity is a way of thinking uniquely, via communicating with one's soul and to do that, people can help you, but people cannot show you. Like how a person can show you a path to walk, but cannot walk it for you.

v) What is your general gameplan for improving your Creativity? Please explain some possible goals and directions you have in mind. How can this class help you specifically.

My general gameplan is to try and expose myself to many different designs and works by different artists with different styles and try to change my way of thinking about an idea and try and express it in different forms. Possible goals and directions i have would be to try and improve my drawing skills in both digital and traditional artworks and i hope i receive comments on my works, be it good or bad.
